Kolossi Castle

Kolossi Castle

A stronghold a few kilometers outside the city of Limassol, Cyprus. The castle of Kolossi, as it stands today, was built in 1454 by the Knights Hospitallers. The castle was first used to store one of Cyprus’ main exports, sugar cane. Later when Cyprus began to cultivate it’s own indigenous grapes, the Kolossi Castle became the center of production and storage for the local Commandaria wine. The word Commandaria, find it’s origins from Old English term for a military headquarter.
