Turkish Republic of North Cyprus
Since 1974 the Republic of Turkey has occupied the northern 40% of the island of Cyprus. The Turkish flag (left) and the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (right) can be seen flown together all over the territory north of the Green Line. Although safe, the travelers that cross the checkpoint into the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus find a very different city than the one they just came. The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus is not a recognized nation by the international community, only Turkey recognizes them as a state. Therefore, a lack of cultural diffusion and westernization is evident.
