Head of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Cyprus, Chrysostomos II of Cyprus was elected in September of 2006 after Chrysostomos I was removed from office due to an illness.
Chrysostomos II is known for his right-wing nationalist views. His branding illegal immigrants in Cyprus as “interlopers who do not belong on the island” has stoked the fire in an county that has been plagued with racial conflict since 1974.
